New Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Thirteen tourists, among them two women, stranded at a remote location in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh due to heavy snowfall, were rescued by the army. The tourists were returning from Shungatser Lake Thursday when their vehicles broke down, and there was two to three feet of snow piled up on the road.

The situation required their immediate evacuation. An Indian Army team reached the stranded tourists and evacuated them to safety, an army official said Friday.

The tourists were rendered all possible support in the form of food, warm clothing and medical care by the troops from a nearby army post. The army jawans along with Border Roads Task Force worked tirelessly, braving sub-zero temperatures at an altitude of 15,000 feet to clear the roads.

On being evacuated to Tawang, the tourists were received by the local military authorities at the Tawang War Memorial.
