A team of the state police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested the five in Gorakhpur, around 250 km from here. The policeman stationed in the district was arrested along with his two local contacts from the neighbouring districts of Kushinagar and Maharajganj. The remaining two were identified as “buyers” from Bangalore.
According to Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal, two .32 bore revolvers and four 9 mm pistols were recovered from their possession. “Besides, there was a huge haul of ammunition which included 100 live 9mm cartridges, 492 empty cartridges as also 49 AK-47 cartridges,” he added.
“The arrested cop was identified as Rajesh Kumar Singh, who hails from Bihar. He was found to be owning a big bungalow in Gorakhpur,” Brij Lal said.
The interrogation of the arrested men was said to have given the STF important leads into what was suspected to be a huge inter-state gun-running business.
