Johor Bahru (Malaysia), Nov 2 (IANS) India’s golfer Arjun Singh carded a third even par round in four days to finish one-under par for the week at the Iskandar Johor Open here Sunday. Arjun, who has been in the top-20 or thereabouts often enough this season, ended 28th and was the best of Indians, who made the cut at the tournament. His previous rounds were 72, 72 and 71 and he finished at one-under 287.
Retief Goosen, former US Open winner, struck a brilliant six-under 66 to edge ahead of the field and win the title at 12-under 276. He finished two clear of Thaworn Wiratchant of Thailand, whose final round of 71 saw him finish at 10-under 278.
Overnight leader and former Ryder Cup star Niclas Fasth of Sweden faltered on the final day with a three-over 75 to finish at seven-under 281 and slip to tied fourth.
Among India’s other players, Gaurav Ghei and Gaganjeet Bhullar, who were in a good position to come inside top-10 at various times, ballooned to 78 and 77 on the final day. Ghei, 10th after third round, ended at one-over 289 and in 34th place, same as Bhullar, who after 36 holes had shared the lead.
Baaz Mann (75) ended at six-over 294 in 55th place, while Firoz Ali (76) was eight-over 296 in 64th place and Harmeet Kahlon (79) ended at 16-over in 78th place.
Goosen, six-under after three rounds and lying seventh, started in style with a birdie on second and an eagle on fourth. He turned in three-under 33 and then added birdies on 10th, 14th and 15th to finish in 66.
Thaworn had three birdies and two bogeys in his 71, while Kane Webber missed a chance of tying for second with a bogey on the 18th. Webber (70) ended third at nine-under 279.
Fasth after two birdies in four holes, dropped five shots between the fifth and ninth with three bogeys and a double bogey and there ended his chances. He had one bogey and one birdie on the back nine. He tied for fourth with four others at seven-under.
