ArcelorMittal workers demonstrate against job losses

The steel producer is axing 9,000 jobs across the globe. About 6,000 jobs are going in Europe, according to the Belgian ‘Flandersnews’ website.

Many steel workers already have to sign on temporarily and at some plants production is shut down for three days a week.

Trade unionist Dirk Piquet was quoted as saying: “It now appears in more and more plants more and more people are being pushed aside. Over the next three years 987 jobs are going at ArcelorMittal in Ghent (in Belgium).

“ArcelorMittal employees simply don’t understand why the company is paying a dividend to shareholders under such conditions,” he said.
