Appoint special teachers for disabled children, says court
September 16th, 2009 - 9:25 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS) Delhi High Court Wednesday took serious note of absence of special teachers for disabled students in government schools, and asked the state government to appoint two such specialists in each of 3,000 state-run schools in the capital.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice Manmohan said: “It’s not fair at all. Why these students are being suppressed by not providing the basic facilities?”
Even as the government counsel said that the process of having special teachers in every school will be “cumbersome”, the bench said: “One special teacher in one school in each of the 12 districts of the capital would be a good beginning.”
The order is to be implemented in schools run by the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
The court also asked the government to conduct door-to-door campaign to list the disabled students and said: “It’s government duty to take care of the children with special needs.”
The court directed the director of education, Delhi government, to appear personally before it Sep 23, the next date of hearing.
