New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) The Supreme Court Thursday directed the Chhattisgarh government to take suspected Maoist conduit Soni Sori to a Kolkota hospital for a examination of injuries she allegedly suffered in police custody earlier this month.

Sori has been accused by police of receiving “protection money” from the Essar group. Essar has denied giving funds to the Maoists. She was arrested Oct 4 in Delhi by the Chhattisgarh Police and taken to Dantewada district of the state for interrogation.

An apex court bench of Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice C.K. Prasad directed the Chhattisgarh government to take Sori to the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata within a week.

Directing the medical examination of Sori, the court referred to the affidavit of human rights activist Gautam Navlakha which said that she suffered injuries not on account of her fall in bathroom as claimed by the police, but due to torture during her interrogation.

The court directed that the Chhattisgarh government would take back Sori to Jagdalpur jail after her medical examination.

The court directed the medical superintendent of the Kolkata hospital to constitute a team of doctors to carry out Sori’s medical examination.
