New Delhi, Aug 16 (IANS) Social activist Anna Hazare was sent to seven days judicial custody in Tihar Jail, hours after he was detained Friday ahead of his fast-unto-death for a stronger anti-corruption Lokpal Bill.

“Anna Hazare refused to sign a personal bond and has been sent to seven days judicial custody in Tihar Jail,” Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat told reporters, describing it as a preventive arrest.

Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said Hazare and his team members, including Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal, were detained because they failed to comply with police guidelines.

“We have no dharnas or event at the Jai Prakash Narayan Park… as a special case we gave it to India Against Corruption (IAC) for three days,” Gupta told reporters.

“We detained Anna Hazare and his team members because they refused to comply with our guidelines and wanted to do an indefinite strike,” he added.

Gupta also added that around 1,400 protestors have been detained until now.

Hazare, who was detained along with Arvind Kejriwal from outside an apartment in east Delhi, was first taken to Police Officer’s mess in Civil Lines in north Delhi.
