Guangzhou, Oct 16 (IANS) Anirban Lahiri and Digvijay Singh were the leading Indians at the end of the first round of the $500,000 Midea China Classic here Thursday. Lahiri, an Asian Games silver medalist and a huge prospect for the future, and Digvijay, who has already secured his card for 2009, shot three-under 68 each and were four shots behind the leader, Chinese Taipei’s Lu Wei-chih. The Indian pair was tied for 18th place.
Lu opened his campaign at a blistering pace by taking the first round lead with a seven-under-par 64 Thursday.
Among other Indians, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Rahil Gangjee, both needing a couple of good results to seal their card for 2009, shot 69 and 70 respectively. Bhullar, was 32nd and Gangjee 44th.
Things were not so good for Amandeep Johl, who with 74 was lying 108th, while Baaz Mann was 117th with 75 and young Himmat Rai shot 76 and was 124th. All three will need good second rounds to ensure weekend action.
The 29-year old Lu fired a total of eight birdies against a lone bogey to take a one-stroke lead over fellow compatriot Hsu Mong-nan while Scotland’s Simon Dunn together with Korea’s Noh Seung-yul and Park Jun-won are both a further shot back in a tie for third place.
The Koreans are trailed closely behind by a total of 12 players who all take a share of sixth place. They include Wales’ Rhys Davies, Australia’s Mitchell Brown, Andrew Dodt, Henry Epstein, Terry Pilkadaris, Richard Moir and Jason King, Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yuan-chi and China’s Kong Wei-hai, Malaysia’s S. Chandhran Siva, Switzerland’s Martin Rominger and Singapore’s Lam Chih Bing.
