New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) Painting a unique picture, scores of men, women and animals marched together in Delhi Monday, demanding reservation for Dalits, Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the private sector.Udit Raj, chairman of the All India Confederation of SC/ST organisations, said that the main focus of the march was reservation, but that other issues were highlighted as well. The maerch took place from Ramlila Ground in central delhi to Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

Animals, like goats, were also part of the march because they are an integral part of a “Dalit’s life”, Raj said.

“There must be reservation for SC/ST in the private sector. We also demand enactment of the Reservation Act and strict implementation of the Atrocities Act. According to the Indian National Bureau of Crime Report (2006) 27,070 crimes were committed against Dalits, though many go unreported,” Raj said.

“This government will not be remembered for any significant work for the benefit of the backward classes,” he added.

He also said that fake caste certificates should be declared a criminal offence.

“People taking advantage using fake caste certificates, when people who actually need help languish in their homes, should be taken to task,” Raj said.
