Anil Ambani now sets sight on EvertonSeptember 14th, 2008 - 2:23 pm ICT by IANS
London, Sep 14 (IANS) After withdrawing his interest in buying English football Premier Club Newcastle United, Indian billionaire Anil Ambani has now set his sights on Everton. According to a report in the Liverpool Daily Post, agents representing Ambani have been in contact with Everton owner Bill Kenwright and are trying to arrange a meeting between the two parties.
Ambani, said to be the sixth richest man in the world, has targeted Everton after failing in an attempt to take control at Newcastle United.
Ambani’s son, Jai Anmol, is reported to have attended Everton’s pre-season friendly against PSV Eindhoven at Goodison Park and had informal talks with Kenwright and club director Robert Earl.
It has been reported that Everton have been openly seeking new investment, with Kenwright reiterating earlier this month that he would happily sell the club to a suitable buyer.
At Everton’s recent extraordinary general meeting at Goodison Park, called by angry shareholders, Kenwright said he was looking for a billionaire to take over the club.
“I am a pauper when it comes to other chairmen. I cannot go on like this, we need a new owner and we will continue to try to find one,” Kenwright was quoted as saying by the daily.
The 49-year-old Ambani had recently been linked with a £230 million takeover of Newcastle, but withdrew his interest because of the ongoing uncertainty behind the scenes at the North East club.
