Andhra declares 456 blocks drought-hit
October 29th, 2011 - 11:04 pm ICT by IANSHyderabad, Oct 29 (IANS) The Andhra Pradesh government Saturday declared 456 mandals or blocks in 15 of the state’s 23 districts as drought-affected in view of deficient rainfall.
The state cabinet, which met here Saturday evening, declared the mandals drought affected after going through the reports of the district collectors.
After declaring nearly half of the state as drought-affected, the state government will seek financial assistance from the central government.
Information and Public Relations Minister D.K. Aruna told reporters that reports are still awaited from the collectors of two more districts.
According to officials, 453 mandals recorded deficit rainfall ranging from minus 15 percent to minus 25 percent during the southwest monsoon (June to September).
During the ongoing crop season (rabi), farmers have taken up cultivation only on 296,000 hectares as on Oct 27 while they would have normally covered 565,000 hectares. The total average cropped area in the state is four million hectares.
