AMU student’s murder sparks violence in Aligarh
October 26th, 2009 - 6:36 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 26 (IANS) An Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) student’s murder sparked tension and violence in Aligarh Monday, where hundreds of the varsity students indulged in vandalism, disrupted rail traffic, damaged public vehicles and also pelted stones at police, officials said.
According to police, Shahnawaz, a final year B.Sc student was shot dead over a petty issue related to parking of a vehicle. Police late Sunday arrested a man allegedly involved in the murder and the involvement of two-three other men is also being probed.
Agitated over the murder of Shahnawaz, as many as 600 students blocked the Delhi-Howrah rail route for hours, demanding those involved in the murder be handed over to them, the officials added.
“The angry students are hell-bent on their demand that the culprits must be first handed over to them,” Superintendent of Police (City) M.S. Chauhan told IANS over phone from Aligarh, some 350 km from Lucknow.
“Though no one has been seriously injured in the demonstrations, additional security has been deployed in the district taking into account the series of protests being carried out by the students. We do not want to take any chance with respect to law and order situation,” he added.
According to officials, the angry students also forced closure of offices in the varsity and also tried to suspend teaching activities in the varsity.
