AMU plans new centres across India
October 17th, 2010 - 7:16 pm ICT by IANSAligarh, Oct 17 (IANS) After the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) opened its centres in West Bengal and Kerala, Muslims in five other states also want similar centres, AMU Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis said here Sunday.
“Muslims living in West Bengal and Kerala are exulted and Assam, Rajasthan, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have requested us to open centres as more and more states want Muslims to take up education on priority basis,” he said.
The AMU recently set up new centres at Malappuram in Kerala and Murshidabad in West Bengal. By 2020, when AMU would be celebrating its centenary as a central university, the centres would be full-fledged campuses with the potential to become universities, Azis said.
He also asked the students to focus on education and not to be carried away by other issues.
He was speaking at a function to commemorate the 193rd birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan who founded the Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College which later developed into the Aligarh Muslim University.
Azis said that Khan judiciously blended modern education with Islamic teachings and set the Muslims on the path of resurgence.
