AMRI death toll rises to 93
December 11th, 2011 - 10:30 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 11 (IANS) The toll in AMRI Hospital fire tragedy rose to 93 after two patients who were evacuated to two different hospitals died Sunday morning.
“Babulal Bhattacharya died in the morning today (Sunday). He died of cardiac arrest and not due to suffocation caused by the fire,” said a doctor at the hospital’s Salt Lake facility.
Bhattacharya was earlier admitted to the Dhakuria branch of the hospital in the city with heart ailments. Following the fire in the early hours of Friday, he was evacuated and shifted to the Salt Lake facility of the same hospital, where he breathed his last.
The other victim was 82-year old female patient who died Sunday afternoon at Bellevue Clinic. She was admitted to the hospital on Friday morning after the fire.
“A female patient who was shifted to our hospital from AMRI hospital, Dhakuria has expired today (Sunday),” said Biswajit Matilal, assitant vice president, corporate communications, Birla Corporation Limited
In another development, a fire engine was pressed into service after smoke was seen coming out of the basement of the AMRI annexe which had caught fire Friday.
“Such an occurring is normal in case of major fires. We were informed about the smoke coming out and sent an engine which doused the flame,” said an officer manning the fire services headquarters in the city.
