Amount of fake currency seized in 2008 double over 2007: CBI
July 24th, 2009 - 9:49 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 24 (IANS) Law enforcement agencies seized fake Indian currency notes (FICN) with the face value of Rs.148 million in 2008 - an amount nearly double of what was recovered in 2007, a senior Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer said here Friday.
According to the official, FICN with the face value of Rs.80 million were recovered all across the country by various state police and other law enforcement agencies in 2007.
“The circulation of actual currency in our country is above Rs.475,000 crore (Rs.4.75 trillion),” the official said.
The CBI registered nine cases related to FICN in 2008 while nearly 1,400 cases were reported from across the country.
The official said there was sufficient evidence that organised groups in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Bangkok and Dubai were pumping in fake currency notes into India.
