Gurgaon, April 27 (IANS) Students from various faculties at the Amity campus here gathered Friday for a condolence meeting and observed a candlelight vigil for MBA aspirant Dana Sangma who committed suicide last Tuesday.

Dana allegedly committed suicide after she was caught cheating from her mobile phone during an examination and subsequently expelled by the invigilator.

It emerged later that 21-year-old Dana was the niece of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

Many students at the Amity campus felt that the conduct of some teachers was of a dominating and bossy nature.

One student, who was in the examination hall with Dana on the day she was caught told IANS: “Dana was not only accused of cheating but the invigilator threatened ‘to finish her career’. Later in the exam controller room, she was tagged with the words ‘flop show’ “.

The exams of various faculties started April 16. But the admit cards of many students were made after April 16. Besides admit cards, examination cards were provided to the appearing students.

“Students having the examination card, but not the admit card, were sent back to their hostel rooms to bring them during the question paper distribution time. Some girl students were seen crying as the examination hours were running out. But the invigilator and exam controller showed no mercy,” students added.

Amity’s Haryana Deputy Vice Chancellor Major General (retd) B.S. Suhag told IANS: “Dana was a well-behaved student. No one never made any complaints about her and nor did she ever complain against any teacher.”

“Out of more than 1,500 students in the university here, only 16 belong to the northeast and they all live in a friendly and healthy atmosphere,” Suhag added.

He further said that a five-member committee under the chairmanship of Padmakali Banerjee has been constituted and it will submit its report before April 30. Any action will be taken only after the reports of the committee.

The invigilator and exam controller have not come to the university after Dana’s death.
