American woman drugged, assaulted in Chennai

Chennai, May 29 (IANS) A US citizen was found “drugged and and molested” in this southern metropolis, the Tamil Nadu police said Thursday. Police identified the woman as Kelly Lawer Packer, 26. They said Kelly, working as a teacher in the city, was found abandoned on a city street May 25. Her molesters stole her mobile telephone and digital camera.

According to police, Kelly’s husband Andrew Packer works in a software company in the city. The couple often went to a bar in a five-star hotel.

On the May 24 night, Andrew reportedly left the bar early while Kelly stayed back at along with an acquaintance, Jose Mathew, who promised to drop her at her flat.

Next morning Kelly was found on a pavement with bruise marks on her body.

She later reported the incident to the US Consulate here, which in turn filed a formal complaint to the Chennai police.

Police said Kelly could not remember what happened to her that night except that she recalled being taken to a place in Anna Nagar. Police are on the lookout for those behind the crime.
