Amarnath samiti calls Jammu bandh Saturday
July 2nd, 2010 - 12:26 am ICT by IANSJammu, July 1 (IANS) The Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS), a group of social, political and religious organizations, has called for a Jammu shutdown Saturday to protest against what it termed harassment of Amarnath pilgrims in the Kashmir Valley.
The SAYSS, which led a two-month-long agitation in Jammu in 2008 over the Amarnath shrine land row, said Thursday that it is agitated over “harassment of pilgrims in Kashmir”.
The shutdown is also to protest against the “tirade against the Indian security forces by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists behind the current phase of stone pelting incidents.”
“We took this decision at a meeting in Jammu late this (Thursday) evening after deliberating on all these issues,” Brigadier (retd) Suchet Singh, a representative of the SAYSS, told reporters Thursday.
“It is essentially to protest against the growing anti-India sentiment in the Valley and harassment of Hindus, tourists and pilgrims and the vicious campaign launched against the security forces,” he said.
He claimed that several trade and political organizations were backing the SAYSS in the protest.
