Alba opposes toxic chemical use in baby products
May 24th, 2011 - 5:33 am ICT by IANSToronto, May 24 (IANS) Actress Jessica Alba, who is expecting her second child, will head to Washington soon to urge members of the US Congress to introduce a new law limiting toxic chemicals in baby products.
The “Fantastic Four” star first became aware of the potentially harmful chemicals used in everyday items when she was preparing to give birth to her first child Honor in 2008, reports torontosun.com.
“When I was pregnant with Honor, I did all of this research and I found out that all of these products have toxic chemicals in them that are in and around our kids and us and they’re causing unnecessary harm on our families,” said Alba.
“I was like, this is nuts, from baby bottles to baby toys, to pacifiers to diapers, and it’s completely unregulated, these toxins that companies are allowed to put in these products and they’re basically just fillers,” she added.
Alba has joined hands with an organisation Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. She is all set to join fellow campaigners at a rally in Washington to pressure lawmakers into taking action.
“I’m going to D.C. next week with this organisation called Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, and we’re trying to get Congress to have toxic chemical reform. So basically all the products that are on our shelves, everyday products… we wanna raise the bar to make sure these toxins aren’t in our products.”
“It shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a given (that baby products are toxin-free),” she added.
