Kolkata, Aug 18 (IANS) An e-mail threat, which claimed to have been sent by the Al Qaeda sparked panic and tension at a college in West Bengal Monday. The e-mail was sent to Murshidabad College of Engineering and Technology at Behrampore town in Murshidabad district, 197 km from Kolkata.

“An employee of the college Ronen Dutta received an email on the college id Monday morning. It said the college would be bombed 12 noon. The sender claimed to be a member of Al Qaeda,” district superintendent Basab Dasgupta told reporters.

“Police vacated the college campus and hostel immediately. Personnel from the bomb squad along with sniffer dogs were called in. But till 4.30 p.m. we have not found anything suspicious,” Dasgupta said.

The police superintendent added that the police is not taking the matter lightly.

“We have handed over the printout of the e-mail to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to see if the mail is a hoax or not. We are also trying to find out who sent the mail and why. We don’t want to take chances as far as the security of the students is concerned,” Dasgupta said.

District sources said that the police have been posted at the college campus for a week from Monday evening.
