AIIMS team examines Odisha gangrape victim
January 28th, 2012 - 4:55 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Bhubaneswar, Jan 28 (IANS) A team of experts from New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Saturday arrived in Odisha to examine the state of a girl who has slipped into coma since after her gangrape, an official said.
The four-member team of leading doctors in forensic medicine, gynecology, DNA and toxicology examined the girl at the Sriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, 26 km from here, a police officer said.
“The medical experts are doing examination of the victim for medico-legal purpose and will give their report in due course,” the official told IANS.
The 19-year-old was allegedly gangraped Nov 28 by some people near her village Arjunagoda, barely 10 km from this capital city.
Her family alleges the rapists were the same people who had assaulted her in 2008 and against whom she had put up a determined fight in court in a molestation case.
The shocking incident came to light recently when the girl was denied proper treatment at a hospital and some journalists reported on her.
The incident has created a political storm, prompting Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy to resign Jan 19 on moral grounds after the opposition and the girl’s family alleged he protected her attackers.
The incident is being investigated by the crime branch of the state police and a one-man judicial commission headed by a retired judge of the Orissa High Court.
The crime branch has already arrested four people and conducted lie-detector polygraph tests on them.
