AIIMS doctor’s licence terminated for child abuse (Lead)
February 2nd, 2011 - 11:08 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 2 (IANS) The practising licence of a doctor of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), accused of sexually abusing a minor boy last month, was terminated by the union health and family welfare ministry Wednesday, an official said.AIIMS spokesperson Y.K. Gupta confirmed that action has been taken against the accused junior resident doctor.
“Based on circumstantial evidence and basic investigation, the doctor has been found guilty. His Master of Chirurgical (degree) registration has been cancelled and his practising licence has been terminated,” a senior member of the institute’s Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) told reporters here.
Meanwhile, a three-member committee set up to probe the incident is expected to give its final report to AIIMS authorities Thursday.
Police are also likely to get the report Thursday. “We have not got the final report of the case from AIIMS. We are expecting to get it Thursday evening,” said a senior police officer.
“We would then take action in the case,” added the officer.
Police Monday registered a case against junior resident doctor Shrijoy P. Joshua for sexually abusing the minor patient. The victim, a resident of northeast Delhi, was admitted to the neurosurgery ward for a brain tumour operation Jan 18.
He underwent surgery Jan 20 and was scheduled to be discharged four days later. But Jan 24, the boy’s father submitted a complaint that his son had been sexually abused by the doctor Jan 23.
The complaint said the doctor took the child to the doctors’ duty room and abused him sexually.
Upon receiving the formal complaint, AIIMS constituted a three-member committee to look into the allegation.
