Ahmedabad police book journalists for sedition, defamation

Ahmedabad, June 1 (IANS) The police here Sunday filed a first information report (FIR) against a reporter and an editor of a national daily’s Ahmedabad edition, charging them with defamation, criminal conspiracy and sedition after a series of reports on city police commissioner O.P. Mathur. The FIR against Times of India reporter Prashant Dayal and resident editor Bharat Desai was lodged under the Indian Penal Code sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 124-A (sedition) and 34 (defamation and conspiracy against the state and the police force), police sources said.

Dayal and Desai were questioned in the afternoon, the police sources said though top police officials refused to comment.

A journalists association in the city has critcised the police action and called for a protest meet Monday morning.

Soon after Mathur, said to be close to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, was appointed Ahmedabad police commissioner May 20, the newspaper published a series of articles focussing on his alleged links with crime gangs in the past.
