Agra crackdown on buffaloes, washermen
December 16th, 2011 - 2:19 pm ICT by IANSAgra, Dec 16 (IANS) Authorities have cracked down on stray buffaloes, cows and ‘dhobis’ in the Taj Mahal town of Agra for polluting the Yamuna river.
Environment Officer Rajiv Rathi told IANS that 143 buffaloes and 10 cows were rounded up Thursday from the river and for obstructing traffic on the busy Yamuna Kinara road.
The campaign also targeted washermen at Hathi Ghat. The Supreme Court had in December 1996 directed municipal authorities to shift them out and prevent the entry of cattle into the river.
The district authorities have been trying for years to shift dairy owners to Agra’s outskirts but all attempts have been foiled due to intervention of political parties.
