Afghan battle kills over 30 militants

Kabul, Aug 21 (Xinhua) At least 30 rebels have been killed when the Afghan National Army (ANA) backed by the US-led coalition forces attacked Taliban safe havens in eastern Afghan province of Laghman, said a coalition statement here Thursday.The operation was launched on intelligence inputs about militants’ activities in the area, the statement said.

The joint forces were engaged by militants using small-arms fire and the fierce battle forced approximately 200 civilians to flee the area, it said.

“A large cache of mortar rounds and improvised explosive device (IED) materials were destroyed on the spot.” “No civilian casualties were reported,” the statement added.

In another incident on the same day, three ISAF soldiers died in east Afghanistan when their vehicle struck an IED while another one died of a non combat injury, according to an ISAF statement here Thursday.

The statement did not disclose the nationality of the dead.
