Chennai, Sep 14 (IANS) National champion Pankaj Advani and Manan Chandra will represent India in the IBSF World snooker championship to be held at Wels, Austria, from Oct 27 to Nov 8.Advani had an unbeaten run in the second selection trials that concluded here Sunday and finished at the top of the overall rankings on cumulative points.
Despite finishing third here behind Alok Kumar, Chandra made it to the Indian team on the combined points from the two rounds of selection trials.
The only time 23-year old Advani was in some bother was against Chandra, who led 2-0 and 3-2 in the best-of-seven frames match played this morning. Advani recovered in time and finished in style with a break of 73 in the seventh.
Earlier, Advani blanked former National champion Alok 4-0.
Sourav Kothari, the fourth player in the selection league, lost 1-4 to Manan and 0-4 to Alok and finished last in the four-player field.
Nine-times world billiards champion Geet Sethi and Alok qualified to represent India in the Masters snooker tournament (40 and above) that will be held concurrently with the World championship.
Men’s league: Pankaj Advani beat Alok Kumar 4-0 (90-0, 109-0, 72-69, 60-22); beat Manan Chandra 4-3 (47-65, 36-83, 67-5, 71-43, 33-75, 62-43, 74-01). Manan beat Sourav Kothari 4-1 (71-44, 50-30, 52-65, 59-50, 80-40). Alok Kumar beat Sourav 4-0 (60-26, 57-43, 61-22, 66-16).
Final positions (second selection trials): Pankaj Advani 1, Alok Kumar 2, Manan Chandra 3, Sourav Kothari 4. Rankings (after 2 selection trials): Advani 1, Chandra 2.
Masters: Group A: Alok Kumar beat SA Saleem 3-0. Group B: Geet Sethi beat Harinarayan 3-0. Play off: Alok Kumar beat MC Manoj 3-1; Geet Sethi beat Saleem 3-0.
