Actor Fred Crane dies
August 24th, 2008 - 1:47 pm ICT by IANSLos Angeles, Aug 24 (DPA) Fred Crane, the actor who wooed Scarlett O’Hara in the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind, has died at 90, family sources said. His fifth wife Terry said he died due to a blood clot in his lung Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.
Crane had been in hospital for a few weeks because of complications related to diabetes.
He played Brent Tarleton in the David O’ Selznick film that made him famous, and was said to be the oldest surviving adult male cast member.
“I’m just a small shard in a grand mosaic,” he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution in 2007, referring to the movie that starred Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
Crane was just 20 when cast in Gone With the Wind, and hadn’t even read Margaret Mitchell’s bestselling novel on which the film was based.
“It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time,” Crane said later.
About eight years back, Crane and Terry converted a mansion in Atlanta into a home with a Gone With the Wind museum.
The home was auctioned off last year largely because of Crane’s medical problems.
He was born in New Orleans on March 22, 1918.
