Action against three Uttar Pradesh schools making students cook meals
March 6th, 2009 - 3:11 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, March 6 (IANS) Authorities of three government schools in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district will face action for making students prepare lunch under the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme, an official said Friday.
“We will take stern action against the staff of three government schools in Banda district, where students prepare the meal,” basic education officer Omkar Rana told IANS on telephone from Banda, some 200 km from Lucknow.
The fact came to light in an ongoing surprise inspection in different schools in Banda, following complaints by parents of the students, he said.
All the three government schools are located in Indira Nagar area of the district.
“Of the three schools, one is of primary level, while the other two are junior high schools - up to class eight,” said Rana.
Asked what action would be taken against the school officials, the official said they would be suspended or their services even terminated after completion of the ongoing inquiry.
About 150,000 schools are covered under the MDM scheme in Uttar Pradesh. Under the scheme, lunch is provided to students till Class 8. Over 18.6 million students are enrolled under the scheme in the state, officials said.
National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education, also known as Mid-Day Meal Programme, was launched as a centrally sponsored scheme on Aug 15, 1995. Its objective is to boost universal primary education and to improve the nutritional value of the food being given to the children.
