Accident at Jindal steel plant kills two workers

Raipur, Aug 11 (IANS) Two workers were killed and one was missing Monday at Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) unit in Chhattisgarh when a 600-tonne hopper loaded with sponge iron fell on them, the police said. The JSPL unit is located at Raigarh town, 220 km west of capital Raipur. The unit is owned by Congress MP Naveen Jindal.

“A case has been registered and bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, we will take action against the JSPL management if the investigation reveals they were negligent towards industrial laws and safety measures,” said, J.K. Thorrat, the district superintendent of police.

The JSPL has also ordered an in-house inquiry into the incident and announced Rs.500,000 compensation to families of the deceased.

“We have rushed our rescue team to remove the heaps of sponge iron under which we suspect the one missing worker is buried,” Sanjeev Chauhan, general manager of JSPL, told IANS.
