Access to information sign of democracy: Habibullah
March 30th, 2011 - 1:02 am ICT by IANSAligarh, March 29 (IANS) Democracy requires an informed citizenry and transparency of information, which are vital to its functioning and also to contain corruption and make governments accountable, National Minorities Commission chairman Wajahat Habibullah said Tuesday, terming access to information “the signature of democracy”.
Delivering Sir Syed Memorial Lecture on “India’s Democracy: What it means for the Minorities”, Habibullah, who also served as India’s first Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), said ruling the masses is no longer the objective of good governance, which is characterized by transparency, accountability and participation of all the citizens.
He said that the National Minority Commission has taken up the cases of Muslim youths falsely imprisoned in Malegaon and Mecca Masjid terror attacks and will facilitate their early release and rehabilitation.
Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis urged the citizens to make optimum use of the handy tool of the RTI (Right to Information) Act to ask whether the funds allotted for development are being properly utilised.
