ACA endorses Katich’s stand on part-time selectors
June 22nd, 2011 - 9:42 pm ICT by IANSMelbourne, June 22 (IANS) The Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) has come out in support of Simon Katich’s stand against part-time selectors in Cricket Australia (CA).
ACA president Michael Kasprowicz said Katich’s strident criticism will help increase the game’s professionalism.
“Seeing what’s been happening with Simon Katich, there has been some good feedback. I know the guy. It was not bitterness regarding his situation,” Kasprowicz was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.
Katich, who was recently axed from the list of centrally contracted players, had accused the selectors of “inconsistent selection policies” and termed his omission as “absolutely ridiculous”. He also campaigned for paid, full-time selectors.
Out of four selectors in Cricket Australia (CA), including chairman Andrew Hilditch, three are part-time, with some paid as little as $40,000.
“It’s like all organisations. If you want to get good people you want to remunerate them. If there is going to be an improvement in the process maybe they do have to make it more of a profession,” Kasprowicz said.
ACA chief Paul Marsh said claimed CA might not be able to afford full-time selectors.
“We’re all aware that the financial situation in Australian cricket at the moment is in a concerning state. In a perfect world you would have full-time selectors that are being paid,” he said.
“I understand that Cricket Australia is not flush with money so there has to be a little bit of realism about the situation.”
