Abu Dhabi arts and music festival opens
April 8th, 2011 - 11:37 pm ICT by IANSAbu Dhabi, April 8 (IANS/WAM) The world of music, arts and dance festival WOMAD, being organised for the third consecutive year, has attracted more than 20,000 visitors on the opening day in Abu Dhabi, it was announced Friday.
The four-day festival, organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), began Thursday.
Abdullah Al Ameri, director of ADACH, said: “WOMAD Abu Dhabi certainly dissolves cultural and social barriers as people from different social and cultural backgrounds gather to enjoy the music and the artistic presentations.”
“The impressive turnout on opening day underlines the important role being played by WOMAD Abu Dhabi as a platform that promotes friendship, cultural understanding and social interaction among different nationalities that live and co-exist in the UAE.”
Chris Smith, director of WOMAD, said: “The incredible performances on the opening-night set the tone for a memorable festival at WOMAD Abu Dhabi 2011.”
