Absconding legislator’s bodyguard surrenders
May 12th, 2011 - 11:02 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, May 12 (IANS) The bodyguard of an absconding Jharkhand legislator, wanted over the murder of a youth who reportedly wanted to marry his daughter, surrendered in a Ranchi court Thursday, police said.
Bharat Mahto, bodyguard to Congress legislator Sawna Lakra, was sent to 14 days judicial custody.
“We will seek police custody of the bodyguard to know details of the murder and carry forward the investigation,” Ranchi’s Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar told reporters here.
Avinash Tiwari of Garwah district went missing April 26. His body was found in Karra of Khuti district last week.
Tiwari’s father has alleged that Lakra, legislator from Khijri, abducted and tortured his son who wanted to marry Lakra’s daughter Usha.
Police say Usha admitted that she knew Tiwari but Lakra denied knowing him.
An arrest warrant has also been issued against Lakra, who has been absconding for a week. Police have stepped up efforts to arrest him.
