About 750 women personnel to guard Indo-Nepal border
November 21st, 2008 - 3:51 pm ICT by IANSPatna, Nov 21 (IANS) India’s paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) will deploy about 750 women constables at the Indo-Nepal border soon to check human trafficking, smuggling and other illegal activities, an official said Friday.”In a bid to strengthen security, about 750 women personnel of the SSB will guard the porous Indo-Nepal border from West Bengal to Bihar,” SSB Inspector General Dilip Tandon said.
He said the main job of the women constables will be to check “suspected” people, particularly women, crossing the border. Also, they will check human trafficking, smuggling of narcotics by women into the Indian territory and entry of women terrorists from Nepal.
Early this year, it was decided that the women personnel of the SSB will be deployed to guard the “open” Indo-Nepal border as the jawans were facing problems in dealing with frisking of women traffickers active in the bordering districts of Bihar and Nepal.
Tandon said the women personnel of SSB are undergoing rigorous training in Himachal Pradesh.
At present, nine battalions of the SSB are guarding over 700 kms of the Indo-Nepal border.
Last year, SSB seized contraband worth Rs.867 million, narcotics valued at Rs.110 million and 2.715 kg explosives from the borders areas. Also, 166 people were arrested for smuggling drugs, carrying explosives and indulging in other anti-national activities.
