Abducted intelligence officer’s wife threatens hunger strike
January 14th, 2011 - 12:35 am ICT by IANSKolkata, Jan 13 (IANS) The wife of an Intelligence Bureau officer, believed to have been abducted by Maoists 82 days ago along with a school teacher in West Bengal’s Purulia district, Thursday threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if the state government did not take steps to rescue them.”The government is still clueless about them though they are untraceable since Oct 23. Despite assurances, nothing has been done from the government’s side. So, I have decided to launch an indefinite hunger strike,” Barnali Biswas said after meeting the director general of police (DGP) at state secretariat Writers’ Building here.
IB officer Partha Biswas was believed to have been abducted by Maoists along with his school teacher friend Soumyajit Bose from a forest near Ayodhya Hills in Purulia district Oct 23.
“So many days have passed since they were abducted by the Maoists, but the government is yet to trace them. We are counting days with anxiety and pain,” said Barnali.
“How long can we wait? I have decided to launch a hunger strike along with Partha’s aged father and mother in the near future,” said Barnali.
Soumyajit’s brother Avijit Basu said families of the two went to meet Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee at the Writers’ Building, but were unsuccessful.
“To our dismay, we could not meet the chief minister and chief and home secretaries because of their busy schedules. We could only meet DGP Naparajit Mukherjee. He was very arrogant while meeting us and even asked us not to come again without prior appointment,” alleged Avijit.
“We are counting days with anxiety and pain,” Avijit told IANS over phone.
