A single source for India’s laws and legislations
December 9th, 2009 - 4:21 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS) Want to know about the plethora of laws that are legislated by India’s parliament and state assemblies? Now there is a single resource for anyone wanting to know about them from a website launched here Wednesday.
The Laws of India database (www.lawsof india.org), a project of PRS Legislative Research, aims to make all these laws easily available to the public, free of charge.
The Laws of India database was launched by Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, a former chief justice of India. In the first phase, the database has laws from 10 states. Over the course of the next few months, laws from other states will be added, PRS representatives said.
The database will have laws uploaded in a searchable pdf format. A robust search engine will enable the retrieval of relevant laws. The database will also help in comparing laws on any subject across different states.
In India, legislation is made by the parliament and state legislatures. Laws made by parliament are available in the public domain at various sites, including those maintained by the law ministry. However, laws enacted by the 30 state legislatures are not easily accessible.
