A rally with a secular message
January 4th, 2010 - 6:00 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) A group of students from Jamia Millia Islamia will carry out a unique cycle rally from Pushkar in Rajasthan to New Delhi on a mission to “join hearts”, or a Dilon Ko Jodo mission.
“At least 25 of our boys and girls will start a cycle rally from the Temple of the Lord of Creation in Pushkar (Rajasthan) to spread fraternal fellow-feeling among people of all religions. This will also go a long way to shed people’s perception about our university,” Jamia Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung told IANS.
The rally will start Feb 3. The eight-day rally will pass through Dargah Ajmer Sharif, Jaipur and finally conclude in Delhi Feb 10.
Jung said Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal is expected to receive the students at Jamia. “What we are trying to do is tell the world that the we are a great institution with around 19,000 students. It’s a secular institution contrary to perception that we are some sort of a Muslim institution,” the vice chancellor explained.
“This rally named as Dilon Ko Jodo is an effort for the same purpose. This is our contribution to society. We also want to tell people that we are not a superior madrassa, but a secular institution.
“I don’t know why many people think we are some kind of a Muslim university. We want to change that mindset of people (about us),” Jung said.
