84 IAS, 33 IPS officers facing trial for criminal charges
April 15th, 2010 - 10:21 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 15 (IANS) At least 84 officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and 33 of the Indian Police Service (IPS) are facing criminal charges, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan told the Rajya Sabha Thursday.
In reply to a question by Rajya Sabha member H.K. Dua, Chavan said in a written reply: “As on 31.03.2010, the number of IAS and IPS officers facing trial for criminal charges in CBI cases are: IAS 84, IPS 33.”
Chavan, who is also the minister of state for science and technology, said that up to the end of March, 21 cases against IAS and six cases against IPS officers were being investigated by the CBI.
The minister said: “The government has taken several steps to restore the public’s confidence in the IAS and IPS. These inter-alia, include speedy trials of corruption cases through setting up special CBI courts and conducting disciplinary proceedings against delinquent officers in a time bound manner.”
He also said that the government was introducing a mid-career mandatory training programme for IAS officers and will recognize and reward good performers by instituting the PM’s awards for excellence.
