65,000 Bihar Police constables stage sit-in
September 18th, 2012 - 2:33 pm ICT by IANSPatna, Sep 18 (IANS) At least 65,000 police constables in Bihar Tuesday staged a sit-in (dharna) to press for their 15-point charter of demands, including various allowances.
All the police constables staged the sit-in during the duty hours in the second of their five-phase protest to draw attention of the state government, a police officer said.
The call for the protest has been given by the Bihar Policemen’s Association to press for various demands. These include grade pay of Rs.2,000 at par with other states, appointment of one havaldar over four constables and one assistant sub-inspector over 12 constables.
“Police personnel have staged a sit-in in front of Bihar Police headquarters here and in all the districts, sub-divisions and blocks,” said association leader Jitendra Kumar Singh.
In the first phase of protest Sep 10, the police personnel protested by wearing black badges while on duty, Singh said.
“If the demands were not met, then the third phase will see a mass hunger strike from Sep 26 to 28 followed by another one from Oct 3 to Oct 5,” he added.
