650 international observers to monitor Russian polls
November 29th, 2011 - 6:16 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, Nov 29 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A total of 650 international observers will monitor the crucial parliamentary elections Dec 4, a top election official said Tuesday.
“We will accredit all 650 international monitors,” election commission head Vladimir Churov announced.
Churov, however, warned monitoring groups including the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe against being “overzealous”.
“You should be very careful. We are guarding democracy and law,” he said.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has warned Western powers against attempts to “influence the course of the election campaign” in Russia, which independent observers have described as Putin’s “total misunderstanding” of the political crisis in Russia.
