San Juan (Puerto Rico), June 14 (IANS) Around 65 drug traffickers have been arrested in a joint operation by the Puerto Rican and US officials in a bid to expose the illegal drug network in the country, EFE news agency reported Saturday. Agents from the US’s FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), Drug Enforcement Administration and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement joined the Puerto Rican police in the operation Friday.
Around 500 officials took part in the operation to execute the 111 arrest warrants issued by a federal grand jury.
The suspects are accused of peddling cocaine, heroin and marijuana in Ponce and Juana Diaz towns, said police superintendent Pedro Toledo.
The gang was also involved in several murders, he said.
US attorney Rosa Emilia Rodriguez said Friday’s massive operation showed that “we can and will eliminate the violent drug-trafficking organisations operating in the south of the island”.
