57 militants surrender in Manipur
December 16th, 2011 - 12:07 am ICT by IANSImphal, Dec 15 (IANS) Fifty-seven militants of different separatist outfits Thursday surrendered to the police in Manipur in the presence of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.
“The surrendered militants belonged to the People’s Liberation Army, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang, the United National Liberation Front and some other outfits,” Manipur police chief Y. Joykumar Singh told reporters.
The surrendered militants also handed over a large quantity of arms and ammunition and some incriminating documents.
The chief minister applauded the role of the Assam Rifles in facilitating the surrender and helping the misguided youths of Manipur through various rehabilitation programmes.
This is the largest batch of militants of different groups surrendered to the government during the past one year and ahead of the assembly elections February next year.
There are about 20 militant groups, including seven banned outfits, in Manipur.
