53 killed in Egypt football riot
February 2nd, 2012 - 3:08 am ICT by IANSCairo, Feb 2 (IANS) At least 53 people were killed and hundreds injured Wednesday when a riot broke out following a football match in northeastern Egypt, the official media reported.
The violence erupted after Port Said city’s team el-Masry beat the most popular el-Ahly three to zero in an Egyptian league match. The fans of the rival teams threw stones at each other amid a weak presence of security forces, Xinhua quoted state TV channel as reporting.
There were different toll reports about the riot.
Nile TV said 40 people died while the official MENA news agency reported only one was killed and 27 injured in the violence after the match.
According to Nile TV, inside the Port Said stadium, which hosted the football game, el- Ahly supporters carried signs that insulted the other team, which triggered the clash.
