January 1st, 2012 - 8:36 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) About 500 people were fined Rs.2,000 each in the capital for drunken driving on New Year’s eve.
According to police, this was a rise from the figure of 340 cases last year.
Those found drinking after taking liquor were slapped fines of Rs.2,000 each. Non-payment of fine may invite a suspension of driving licence and a jail term.
“We deployed 50 teams of traffic police. Many thought we would be lenient but they were proved wrong,” said Satyendra Garg, the joint commissioner of police (Traffic).
He added that like in 2009 and 2010, 2011 too ended without any festivity-related accident.
Till Nov 30, police had prosecuted 15,954 for drunk driving. The number stood at 12,784 in 2009 and 11,388 in 2010.
