38 soldiers die in Afghan chopper crash (Lead)

Taliban Kabul, Aug 6 (IANS) At least 31 members of the US special forces and seven Afghan soldiers were killed in a NATO helicopter crash in east Afghanistan, President Hamid Karzai said in a statement Saturday.

The incident occurred Friday night in Wardak province, Xinhua quoted the statement issued by the Afghanistan president office as saying.

NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was yet to make any statement in this regard.

The spokesman of the Wardak provincial administration, Shahidullah Shahid, told Xinhua that a NATO helicopter crashed in Syed Abad district during a military operation Friday night.

On the other hand, Taliban outfit, according to local media, claimed responsibility, saying a helicopter had been shot down by militants, leaving several people aboard dead.
