38 killed, 19 injured in Jammu and Kashmir accident (Lead)
February 25th, 2009 - 3:01 pm ICT by IANSJammu, Feb 25 (IANS) At least 38 people were killed and 19 injured when the bus they were travelling in skidded off the road in the mountainous Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday morning, police said.
The accident took place when the driver lost control of the bus while taking a sharp turn on the road. The bus skidded and fell into Neeru nullah, a tributary of Chenab river at Pul Doda in Doda district, about 170 km north-east of Jammu, the state’s winter capital.
Thirty six people died on the spot while two succumbed to their injuries later, a police officer said.
The bus was on its way to the district headquarter town of Doda from Bhaderwah.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sought a detailed report on the accident, the officer added.
