34 people rescued from Himachal’s snow-bound areas

Shimla, Jan 12 (IANS) Thirty-four people struggling for survival in the snow-covered tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh for the past six days were rescued Monday, an official said here.Twelve people were airlifted from Satingri in Lahaul and Spiti district, 22 from Killar in Chamba district, the government spokesperson said, adding that two choppers were pressed into service for the rescue operation.

Heavy snowfall during the past six days has cut off most of the tribal areas from the rest of the country.

The minimum temperatures continued to remain below the freezing point in tribal areas.

Keylong, the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti, recorded the minimum temperature at minus 11.8 degrees Celsius and the maximum at minus 5.9 degrees Celsius, the meteorological office here said.

The minimum temperature at Kalpa in Kinnaur district was minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, while Shimla recorded 3.8 degrees Celsius.
