33 killed in Madhya Pradesh bus accident (Lead)
June 1st, 2009 - 11:10 pm ICT by IANSBhopal, June 1 (IANS) At least 33 people were killed and eight others injured when their bus careened off a bridge and crashed into a dry river bed in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh Monday evening, police said.
The bus, which had around 50 passengers, fell off the Rajghat bridge over Chambal river and crashed into the dry river bed. While 29 people died on the spot, four succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. The bus was on its way from Dholpur in Rajasthan to Morena, 350 km from here.
The bodies are being sent to Morena district hospital for postmortem.
“Rescue and relief operations are on,” Morena Superintendent of Police S.P. Santosh told IANS by phone.
The district administration has announced a compensation of Rs.50,000 to the kin of each of those killed and Rs.25,000 to each of the injured.
