30 illegal Pakistani immigrants held in Britain
April 15th, 2011 - 12:19 am ICT by IANSIslamabad, April 14 (IANS) At least 30 Pakistanis working illegally in Britain have been arrested in a series of operations across the country, the British High Commission here said Thursday.
Around 270 other workers of various nationalities were arrested by the UK Border Agency (UKBA), Xinhua reported citing a high commission statement.
British immigration minister Damian Green said in a statement: “The UK Border Agency officers across the country have carried out a major enforcement crackdown which has generated a large number of arrests, cash seizures and prosecutions.”
Steps are now being taken to remove the majority of these illegal workers from Britain, the high commission statement said.
Carol Doughty, regional director of the agency in Pakistan and the Gulf region, said: “We do not single out Pakistanis. We will not tolerate this abuse from (people of) any nationality. We will take action against all of those who are living in Britain illegally, including those who overstay, illegal entrants and those working without permission.”
The statement said Britain and Pakistan share a close relationship through ties of history, trade, investment and security.
