Panaji, Jan 25 (IANS) Three police officials, including a senior inspector, were Tuesday suspended following a departmental enquiry into a custodial death involving a non-resident Indian (NRI) chef earlier this month. Police Inspector Sandesh Chodankar, Sub-Inspector Radesh Ramnathkar and Head Constable Sandip Shirvaikar were suspended after the enquiry found them guilty of “procedural lapses”, a police spokesperson said.

Cipriano Fernandes, 39-year-old chef, died in police custody Jan 7 after being allegedly beaten up by the police, first in a police jeep and then at the police station.

While the police initially claimed that Fernandes had died of natural causes, an autopsy confirmed six severe injuries on his body.

The state government then initiated a probe headed by a gazetted officer into the incident.

Cosme Fernandes, a kin of the dead chef, had refused to claim the body from the government morgue until the guilty policemen were brought to book.
